Everyday we are either managing this life or creating one. We are either moving the garbage all around as it comes in in order to never have to deal with it or we are pulling lessons and dealing with challenges head on. Is life happening TO you or FOR you?
The question of whether life is happening TO us or FOR us is a profound one, and it's worth discussing with compassion and forgiveness in mind…
Life is happening To you -
Just about all of us are going through or have gone through something in our lives that causes extreme stress. It may be something we suffer from on such a high level that we avoid it at all costs. After all, it's the thoughts that cause the suffering, and not so much the thing. When we stay stagnant and bottle up our thoughts and feelings, we try to manage our lives around them, hoping that the pain will eventually subside. In this situation, life is happening TO us. Life is not meeting our expectations, and we feel lost, angry, and disappointed. I don’t care how much money you have; we all come across this.
Life is happening FOR you -
What would happen if we addressed that “something” today? How would we feel if we took a step today, however small, to end that suffering? If the event has already happened, we can still choose to pull the lessons from it and grow. How would it make us feel if we took the suffering and turned it into something positive?
Listen, I’m not a fool. I’m a realist. We don't go from suffering to joy instantaneously, but we can make a decision right now to change our state and refuse to let suffering take up residence inside us. How do we start? It starts with us, and it can start right this instant.
We start by changing our state right now. It’s that fast. We are allowed to be a different person with changing belief systems if we see that the ones we have are harmful to our well-being. That decision, that action, can happen immediately. We no longer allow suffering to live inside us. Listen, things happen; we make bad decisions, people don’t live up to our expectations, he did this, she did that, my body failed me in this way, her body failed her in that way. Consider asking ourselves a few questions about this event that is causing our suffering:
“What can I appreciate about this situation?”
“How can I grow or learn from this?”
“What positive thing happened due to this situation?”
When we change our state and decide that we are not going to suffer anymore, we replace that suffering with growth and progress, and that is what life is all about. That's when this precious thing we call LIFE starts to happen FOR us. Now we have to concentrate on keeping this state of mind permanently, and that is called changing our identity or our story and you can read more about that in my post about the 4 Towers.
